Beep Beep!

"Ma'am, you're going to have to step aside. Please turn out your pockets and keep your arms straight out for me---"

"Oh! It must be my silly nails. You see, I just painted them with magnetic nail polish!"

Ok, so maaaaaaaybe that didn't really happen to me at the airport. Buuuuuuuut I have to say, these new nail polish trends are starting to be hard to catch up with! There have always been new & innovative ways to paint/decorate your nails, like those nail stampers, nail pens, shatter/crackle polishes, mood changing polishes, scented polishes, and the list goes on, I'm sure.

Well, the hottest new trend now seems to be magnetic nail polishes. I was at Sephora the other day, and Tracy (new bff i met) showed me exactly how it worked. I had read about them & seen videos, but it was one of those things I really wanted to see for myself, you know? So, to my understanding, there are little "metal" bits in the nail polish formula that are attracted to the magnet provided on the bottle cap. When your nail is still wet, you use the back of the bottle cap (magnet) and rock it back and forth against your nail. Make sure not to touch the surface of your nail. And in moments, voila! A unique wavy-type of nail design will show up on your nail.
Well, the Sephora only had the metallic silver/grey & the purple, so those were the ones I tried. I liked the way the purple one looked more so than the silver (and probably the gold too) because I don't think the magnetic effect shows up as much as with the purple one.

STEP 1: Paint a coat of the polish onto your nail. I suppose you could have put on one coat, waited for it to dry, then applied a 2nd coat, but since this was a demo, I was super anxious to see the end product! hehe ;P

STEP 2: Turn the cap upside-down & rock it slowly left to right as close as possible to the surface of your nail, WITHOUT touching it. TIP: make sure to do so when your nail is still wet for best results.

STEP 3: View the unique design! ta-da! Please ignore my index finger...not part of the demo. lol.

So afterwards, I wanted to try it for myself and I ended up doing my entire left hand. I couldn't do it correctly at first and my index finger just looked like I had painted it purple. Then, my boyfriend tried using it on my thumb (yes, for some odd reason, he seemed intrigued by it & wanted to play with it) and it was a success! Finally, I had one last finger left to try it on, my lil pinky. I got the hang of it with the help of Tracy (I think my bf was laughing so he wasn't helping at all...I think he enjoyed watching me struggle), but it takes practice and I'm sure more interesting designs can be made.

Overall, I think it's a cool concept, but for $16 for a teeny tiny bottle and in only 2 colors thus far, I am not quite sure I'm willing to try it out yet. Plus, without a top coat, the nail polish was chipping the very next day and the design seemed to grow fainter as the days passed.
I think this idea is pretty cool & unique, but I like the effect of the shatter more. But don't take my word for it! Try it out & let me know what you think of it! :) Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

What do you mean it has been over 2 weeks since my last post??? Unfortunately, sometimes life gets in the way of doing things you enjoy. And by "life," I mean the life of someone working 40hrs a week. A real working girl?? Yup. That's me. At least, for now ;P To be honest, I haven't quite adjusted to it yet. I'm still struggling to find a balance between work, family, friends, and "me" time, but I promise I'll try my best to update weekly (at least!). Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you guys out there!

So, I've never actually described my "style" before. I must admit, I was never the trendiest girl in my class, or always the most put-together, but I always wore what I liked and didn't care about whether or not others appreciated it. In high school, you could catch me in a t-shirt paired with a ruffly drawstring skirt with pink, grey & black striped legwarmers & black flats with giant flowers at the toe. Sounds like I was a mess, huh? I'd like to think that I've come a long way from that, but there are times when I enjoy just wearing what I like, whether or not they all may go together. So hopefully this particular outfit of the day (OOTD) will show you all a better sense of what I like to wear and more about, well, me.

Over the weekend, I was at a store looking for some bright-colored blazers. The manager told me I wouldn't find it anywhere since it was autumn and bright colors just don't have a place in this season. "Fall colors are in now," she said, in a snappy, matter-of-fact tone.

Sure, the browns, oranges, beiges, dark blues are great, but I like wearing what I want whenever I want and sometimes I think people may be a bit too closed-minded and have rather strict or conservative ideas about fashion. This is in, that is not. No white after Labor Day or, you can't mix and match gold & silver jewelry. When it comes to fashion, I like to wear what I like and what I think looks good on. I follow some rules and like to break others. Sometimes I get inspired by the current trends, and other times I don't. I don't like following trends to a tee, but rather, be inspired by them & make it my own, in a way that is comfortable for me to wear. Besides, the weather in SoCal has been pretty warm for the most 90degrees and then the next day, it wold rain and the weather would be closer to the 70s. Hmph. Make up your mind already!

Clothing: top (f21), white denim jeans (zara)
Shoes: jelly flats (loehmann's)
Accessories: Minnie Mouse charm bracelet watch (Macy's), Juicy bracelet (Juicy Couture), Hello Kitty 3D ring (Hot topic), Spinning flower ring (souvenir from Mexico), Necklace (gift from friend who bought it for me from Turkey), Bow belt (Charlotte Russe)

Hope you enjoyed this one! And please share how you would describe your personal style in the comments below. Do you ever feel a little whimsical like me? Do you dress more for comfort or style?

Until next time! <3

Cool Collabs to Come!

As a born & raised shopaholic, the only thing better than shopping your favorite brands at your favorite stores, is shopping from designer fashion lines which resulted from a love affair between two of them! Yes, I'm talking about the awesome love babies of two of your favorite things, and just when you thought it couldn't get any better, sometimes those little love children are available for an affordable price! Ok, so that might have sounded like I am a supporter of human trafficking. Anyway, you know what I mean!

There are SO MANY different collabos nowadays. Collaborations can be between a company and a nonprofit. A popular example of this is all the Breast Cancer Awareness items in stores now, from power tools to dishwashing gloves to fruit snacks to curling irons...They can also be between your favorite frozen  yogurt shop & an internationally recognized brand. Know what I'm referring to? The Yogurtland x Hello Kitty collaboration of course! Did you collect all the spoons? Because I sure did!

You have probably noticed a lot of collaborations in department stores in the last few years (Vera Wang for Kohls, Sophia Vergara for Kmart), Target (Anna Sui, Missoni, Rodarte, William Rast, Alexander McQueen, Dolce Vita, Paul Frank), WalMart (Miley Cyrus x Max Azria), Sephora (Hello Kitty, Tokidoki), H & M (Jimmy Choo), and the exciting list goes on :) ...but which ones are YOU are personally looking forward to?

In this post, I'll be sharing 3 of my favorite collaborations that are coming soon to a store near you!

HELLO KITTY FOR FOREVER 21 (November 18, 2011)

As you may or may not already know, I am a pretty BIG Hello Kitty fan. I have attended her 35th birthday festivities in Culver City as well as the Sanrio 50th anniversary events in Santa Monica. She is one of those timeless characters who has become not only a part of my childhood, but has "grown up" with me, in a way. She came out with her very own line of wine (that rhymes hehe) last fall, has a fine jewelry collection with Kimora Lee Simmons, & has a range of beauty products at Sephora. Sounds like she has come a long way from little velcro wallets and plushies, right? Hello Kitty and even Sanrio as a brand has really matured over the years and somehow I just can't help being drawn to Hello Kitty & her je ne sais quoi.

Needless to say, I am highly anticipating the upcoming Hello Kitty for Forever 21 fashion line! Not only are the pieces just ADORABLE, but I think they could be incorporated into your everyday work outfit (shhhhh! i'll find a way to work it in...but that will have to wait until after Nov 18th, the scheduled date of release...) too. Ok fine. They might not be work appropriate, but definitely intern appropriate ;P Haha. But overall, the baby pink scarf & matching beanie set & bright red cardigan all look so fun & fresh. I can't WAIT to get my hands on some of these! Ok, so who am I kidding? I'll probably end up with 90% of this collection...goodbye paycheck!

Anyone interested in lining up with me for the release? Any takers? Ok so maybe I'm kinda sorta really excited for this collection and sometimes stay up at night thinking about it, ok! Unfortunately, I will be in Hong Kong during the release, so I don't know what to expect! Hello Kitty is definitely a bigger icon in Asia than in North America, sooooo things might get a little crazy...! eek!

VERSACE FOR H&M (November 17, 2011)

I know, some of you might be thinking, have I died & gone to heaven? Is this fo reals?!?!?! That was my 1st reaction too. I'm just hoping that I'll be able to grab at least 1 item on that day. Sadly, the collection will be released on November 17th, so I won't be in the US! Arggghhhh! I'm hoping it will also be released in Hong Kong so that I will get a chance to get my hands on one of the pieces! 0_0

The range is now online & I have selected a few of my favorite items to share with you! I don't think I'd want to be anywhere else in the world other than the nearest H&M store on the morning about you?

JASON WU FOR TARGET (February 2012)

YES. You heard right. THE JASON WU. As in Michelle Obama's inaugural gown. Yup. That guy. And he is going to be designing a collection for Tarjay. Say whaaaaat?

I am not sure if it will be as sought-after as the Missoni collection, but I'm just hoping the Target team will be more prepared this time around! No more embarrassing website crashes I hope! Keeping my fingers crossed!

Battle of the Brands

Have you ever seen something that you absolutely LOVE, and thought to yourself, I HAVE GOT TO HAVE IT! Then, with hands shaking and fingers trembling, you slowly lift the price tag, eyes scanning for those dreaded succession of numbers after the $ symbol...only to find that you really shouldn't and cannot be spending $XXX on it? Well, dismay NO MORE! In addition to OOTDs and styling tips, I've decided to do a series on finding similar styles or lookalikes to my favorite designer brand items for a more affordable price. I will be focusing on "big label-inspired" shoes, handbags, clothes, etc. as opposed to counterfeits/fakes.

I mean, we all have an inner frugalista, right? ;P Especially in this economic climate, I'm hoping this series will help you to continue to express your style & be as trendy as you wanna be, while saving money (well, to some degree, since you could otherwise be buying those brand-new Jeremy Campbells online or that new Marc Jacobs purse!).

Who doesn't want to have the look they love, for less?

For my 1st post, I'll be showing you some cute suede wedges that are PERFECT for the Fall season. Don't get too close to your laptop, lest you drool all over it...

3, 2, 1...Let the battle begin!

Weekend Wear

Life's been pretty hectic lately! I am now working at 2 different companies Mon-Fri so when the weekend comes along, I find myself feeling pretty lazy about getting out of bed, not to mention getting dressed!
This weekend, I spent it camping with my boyfriend & his family by a gorgeous marina. The weather was SPECTACULAR! It was warm during the day (mid 70s-80s) and a bit cooler in the evening. It had been raining just a couple days before we our trip, so we had all been a bit worried. Phew! Had a fun time :)
Day at the Marina
Baggy white t-shirt (F21), Blue shorts (Charlotte Russe), Brown leather sandals (Rainbow), Foldable hat (borrowed from my mother), Crossbody floral chain purse (Victoria's Secret), Owl earrings (F21), Chunky black ring (CottonOn), Silver key necklace (Tiffany's),Hello Kitty watch (Sanrio), Bow sunglasses (local store)

Meet Teddy! He belongs to my boyfriend's family.
Haha doesn't this give a whole new meaning to "doggy bag?"
Meet Cocoa! She is definitely not a morning dog

Saw this little unique piece at the flea market.
This coral beaded necklace reminded me of a rib cage (I don't know why) but
I love the color blocking!

Personal defense against the wind: braid. Ta da!

I wish weekends were longer so that I could post more casual outfits up like this one! ;P
